On Gethen you would feel cold. Overly cold. It was not a mistake when they also named the planet by: Winter.

It turns out that an Ice Age takes the whole planet in a frigid chrysalis. Ice from the poles

choking the continents with their glaciers, and Gethen, like the Gethenians, were always marked by their hostile climate. Hostile perhaps to me, and you, but to its inhabitants they face the ice just like the world, the way it is.

There are a handful of different words in their languages, either Karhidish or Orgota, for the various states, textures and appearances of snow. Knowing how to describe nuances on how snow falls, the state of ice, the stride of the white clouds, the float of frozen pieces in the seas and rivers and lakes. In a cruel winter, which usually appears very bright. A light that does not heat up. An icy mirage.

Unlike how it is on Terra, Gethen's rotation axis is almost vertical. Counting thus with few degrees of tilt, when compared to its orbit. But what does this lead to? The seasons of the year that are interspersed here by hemispheres, north and south; in Gethen, they manifest all over the globe at once. So — when in the summer — no matter where you are, it will be summer wherever your powersledge takes you. Until the planet's position changes again, along its revolution. This entails only a decreasing fraction of solar radiation, but enough to disrupt already uncomfortable weather patterns; making the soaked-gray summer, return to the ruthless-white winter.

Yet Gethen also shares many similarities with Terra, and with all the other inhabitable planets, colonized by the Hainish. Man blossoms and can perpetuate his existence, only, within an environment with limited physical factors. Gethen is right at its most extreme. It is a marginal planet.

And Winter seemed to be unique in many ways. If the Ekumen sent you towards the South Orion Arm, there would not be much beyond this system. No other world around, that is known, has been found holding humans besides Gethen. It is a considerable distance apart from the prime worlds of the Ekumen, core worlds in which our race began. It would take 50 years running within the light to complete a trip to Hain. Now if your destination were Terra, an entirely new life you would have to renounce on the journey. The nearest planet, 17 light-years away, is Ollul — used as base for the first Ekumenical missions to Winter. From Investigators, and later the First Mobile: Genly Ai, an Terran.

Its sole satellite: a bleak and reddish moon. Always marked by the same shadows, ominous it would stare back at you all night long. On its captured rotation, the crimson moon leaves permanently stationed the same wrinkled mask over the planet. With a revolution period of 26 Gethenian days, it plays a crucial role in their lives; being key to their counting system, establishing the structure of months, and the cycles of their Kemmer.
